Preparation days

Namaste!

For the next three months, we will be volunteers for the Himalayan Rescue Association at a small clinic in Pheriche, Nepal. Pheriche is a small town on the Everest Base Camp trek and the main provider of healthcare in the region for both locals and travelers. There will be another medical tent at basecamp for the climbers but it won't be open until later in the year. This clinical experience is part of Hillary's wilderness medicine fellowship training and will last from March until early June.

To get to Pheriche, we will fly to Kathmandu where we will stay for about a week learning Nepali and getting supplies ready. Kathmandu is in the foothills of the Himalayas and about the altitude of Denver. Then we will take a small propeller plane to Lukla at about 9000 feet. From there we will hike for 5-6 days through several small towns to arrive at Pheriche at about 14,500 feet.

There will hopefully be a intermittent Internet access and we will try to update this blog and post a few photos when we can.

We depart from Boston on Wednesday and are awaiting the arrival of two nephews as well (both of our sister-in-laws are due within a week of each other and our departure). Hopefully they will be born before we leave.

More to follow... Gotta go pack.
